The first Call for Ideas
in a H2020 FET-Open project is born
In a knowledge-based world, innovation is king and technology transfer is king.
The ability to innovate is widely recognized as a critical source of competitive advantage for economies.
Generally, technology transfer is the process by which discoveries made in the laboratory are transformed into commercial products that can reach the market.
Universities are the main players in the process of innovation; the past two decades have seen the emergence of structured mechanisms for transforming university inventions into commercial products and services.
Technology transfer has a better chance of success in some industries than others.
Life sciences is a vertical that is well-aligned with university research activities. A sense of realism, however, is necessary: technology transfer from universities is, expensive, constrained by environmental factors, and likely to fail more often than succeed.
The Importance of collaborative research activities through Europe
Depending on the nature of technology and the capacity of the recipient, the process of technology transfer may be iterative, collaborative, and fairly complex.
The European Union has understood this very well. In a contemporary world – where great economic and scientific powers such as the United States, Japan, China and India play – the only way for the Eurozone countries to remain competitive is to invest in trans-European research, which combines the skills of researchers from different countries.
The Horizon 2020 FET Open programme has been designed for this purpose also.
FET Open, now part of the EIC Pathfinder pilot, supports the early-stages of the science and technology research and innovation around new ideas towards radically new future technologies. It also funds coordination and support actions for such high-risk forward-looking research to prosper in Europe, and FET Innovation Launchpad Actions aiming at turning results from FET-funded projects into genuine societal or economic innovations.
Inclusion, participation, new ideas: these are the keywords of BioWings BiomediCALL 2020
The BioWings Consortium believes in the path traced by the European Union and chose to start a disruptive initiative within a FET Open project: a Call for Ideas.
By 2020, the BioWings Project promotes «BiomediCALL 2020», a Call For Startup targeted at aspiring researchers, students or PhD ready to develop innovative projects in the Life Sciences sector.
The main purpose of the “BioWings BiomediCALL 2020” contest is to encourage the generation of new product ideas and solutions based on Smart materials – such as piezoelectric (PE) and electrostrictive (ES) materials, in the medical domain as well as in other application scenarios.
Such ideas will extend the potential outreach of the BioWings technology and will foster the cooperation between the BioWings Consortium and the research community.
The Call is open to researchers, students and PhD from the following Universities:

●Lund University (Sweden);
●Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel);
●École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland).
